Colca Canyon Weather

The weather in the Colca Canyon is generally like spring weather through most of the year with lots of sunshine. This makes the area ideal for acclimatising before climbing to higher altitudes. The Peruvian weather can be quite unpredictable because of the varied geography across the country. While the coast may be warm, the mountains can be pretty cold, and the jungle areas have yet another weather pattern. However, one thing is for sure in Peru - somewhere in the country, the sun is shining.

While at Arequipa, you can generally expect clear skies and sunshine. It is usually much warmer here than what is officially suggested. Take some warm clothing while visiting the Colca Canyon where the high altitudes make it quite cold. During winter nights, temperatures are known to plunge to below zero. Rains are a rare occurrence in the canyon so rainwear is largely unnecessary.

The dry season lasts from mid-April to mid-November and the mercury usually dips to below zero in the nights. Daytime temperatures range between 15-20 °C in the canyon. There is not much temperature fluctuation during the rainy season, which lasts from the end of November till the end of March. This is due to the overcast skies that block the sunrays. At such times, you can expect the mercury to vacillate between 5 °C and 10 °C.
